The young engineer, out of school for only a couple of years approached the Elder non-degreed engineer and asked, “How do you know when your idea for a design is the right one?”
He leaned over from behind his drafting table and said, “You just know.”
The younger engineer pondered for a moment and responded, “You mean when there’s a certain elegance, a simplicity to it?”
The Elder’s eyes lit up, “Yeah, yeah, you just know it’s right, there’s something about it,” He responded, struggling for words and yet sensing that the younger engineer was on the right track.
The younger engineer smiled, “It’s kinda a Zen thing isn’t it?”
“Exactly!” the Elder exclaimed with the youthfulness of a child who just found the cookie jar, “It’s that basic internal knowing of it being right….”
Many years later the idea of intuition in innovation never left the younger engineer. He had seen and felt it too many times and the times he bucked against it the results were less than the best.
